Cybersecurity at RSA Conference 2011

One of the world's major IT conferences is taking place in San Francisco this week.

The RSA Conference 2011 brings together security professionals from around the world for a series of lectures and networking opportunities - and one of the big themes this year is cybersecurity.

US Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn will make a keynote presentation to the conference on the subject. Cybersecurity at the RSA Conference will also be represented by a panel discussion involving Michael Chertoff (pictured), former US Secretary of Homeland Security, and the commanders of the US Cyber Command and US National Cyber Security Alliance.

Other hot topics being discussed will be security in cloud computing and wireless security. Former US President Bill Clinton will give a keynote address on Friday, but due to "contract restriction" the media will not be allowed access to his speech.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the RSA Conference, with over 350 suppliers exhibiting products and services.

Cybersecurity is a main issue on the agenda. "This year, more than any other year in the past, it is cyber warfare," SA Program Committee Chairman Hugh Thompson told GCN.com. Deputy Defense Secretary Lynn's keynote will present an overview of the government's cybersecurity strategy. The debate involving Chertoff and the commanders of the US Cyber Command US National Cyber Security Alliance will take place Wednesday. Thompson told GCN that many speakers have included the WikiLeaks into their sessions.

Another major issue on the agenda this year is cloud computing, particularly cloud security governance and risks. Thompson said the range of topics reflected the major position cloud computing now has in enterprise IT.

The conference's first major keynote on Tuesday was undertaken by Art Coviello, RSA SA Chairman, whose talk was entitled "Trust in the Cloud: Proof Not Promises". Coviello said the growth of the sector meant more attention needs to be placed on resolving cloud computing security issues such as trust, the security of coud architecture and the lack of industry-standard protections for cloud computing services.

Coviello said RSA will later this year launch a Cloud Trust Authority which has the goal of offering a complete identification management and security compliance solution, enabling organizations to view the security profiles on multiple cloud computing platforms and create a better overall picture of strengths and weaknesses.
