No Boost For Sydney Opera House Security

Security officials say they will not boost the security around the Sydney Opera House despite a photo of the building appearing in an online Al Qaeda magazine.

The photo is included on a page in the magazine Inspire which is published by associates of Al Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula.

The image is placed alongside an article on bomb-making and the use of AK-47 rifles.

Police officials said there was no direct threat to the Opera House in the article.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Dein told ABC News there was no evidence in the article that Al Qaeda was planning to attack the Opera House.

"There's no reference anywhere to the Opera House in Sydney but that's the purpose of the magazine," Dein said.

Officials are however worried about the influence such an image could cause.

"It's written in English, it's easy to read and it's there for the purpose of inciting, convincing, influencing someone who might be a bit vulnerable to think about committing... if they had the bad thoughts, about putting those bad thoughts into action," Dein said.

"What we are concerned about is what influence this particular magazine can have on the vulnerable people in our community who are likely to be influenced by this extremist rhetoric," he added.

To this end Attorney-General Robert McLelland on tuesday said he'd written to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) asking it to remove the material.
