A classic luxury car design has been given 21st century security features to counter the threat of explosive devices faced by influential figures around the world.
The result is the Jaguar XJ Sentinel – a car created by Jaguar in collaboration with Centigon that conforms to B7-level security protection standards.
Centigon is a prominent military and commercial armored vehicles firm and, in order to produce this design, it worked in tandem with Jaguar through an exclusive manufacturing agreement. The firm has a similar arrangement with another world-famous automotive firm, Land Rover, and this has resulted in another armored vehicle upgrade – the Land Rover Discovery Armored.
Centigon merged with Carat Duchatelet in 2008 to form Carat Security Group. Its products, according to the firm, are 'the preferred choice of governmental and commercial operations worldwide.'
The Jaguar XJ Sentinel is an armored adaptation of the original luxury car that features a high impact steel/Kevlar exterior. This is effective against a maximum of 33 pounds (equivalent to 15 kilograms) of explosive material (including TNT) detonated in close proximity to the car.
Other new security features including protection on the underside of the vehicle and bullet proof glass.
While all these hi-tech security augmentations make the Jaguar XJ Sentinel a heavier car all-round, boosted suspension, steering and braking systems offset the additional weight.
The armor protected Jaguar is suitable for security firms and governments alike: in the latter category, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has just acquired one for his own use.
It offers protection against a wide range of external threats and it doesn’t differ visually from a standard Jaguar XJ. This makes its security features a subtle feature that provides reassurance and peace of mind for those on the inside, but gives very little away to those on the outside.
Customers that order a Jaguar XJ Sentinel get the benefit of a professional advisor to discuss the features they would especially like included.
The Jaguar XJ Sentinel's ballistic performance was certified by UK Defence/Research firm QinetiQ and the car made its public debut at the 2010 Moscow International Motor Show.
