Fire PPE Market Set For Growth

The fire Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) market in North America is set to grow by over $100 million over the next six years, says a new report.

Analysts Frost & Sullivan say the market earned revenues of $622.1 million during 2010, and that this will grow to $751.1 million by 2017.

The company said that although growth in the fire PPE market was going to be somewhat slower compared to previous years due to the high level of compliance with PPE regulations, and the lower rate of replacements for older PPE required, there was still room for innovation in the marketplace.

"The PPE market is heavily dependent on technological innovations for its sales," said Frost & Sullivan research analyst Ashwini Ravishankar. "It is important for PPE manufacturers to specifically cater to the needs of fire departments that are willing to spend extra to ensure the comfort of their firefighters,"

Frost & Sullivan said the key to success in the future PPE market will increasingly be based on fire departments' demand for superior levels of comfort, durability and functionality.

Specifically, the company said growth areas will be innovations aimed at reducing the weight of PPE gear, boots and self-contained breathing apparatus, the safety and comfort of turnouts and the dexterity and fit of gloves.

However, the company noted that reduced federal grants due to the impact of the recession will have an impact on PPE markets."The main factor that influences growth in this market is the federal grant money, which is used to purchase PPE and fire firefighters," said Ravishankar. "While the funding patterns have been stable for many years, in 2010, the allocated funding took a steep cut. This is likely to have a negative influence on the PPE market."

Ravishankar added that value-added services such as such as cleaning and repair, maintenance contracts, on-site training, ongoing technical support and customized products would help PPE suppliers to grow their businesses grow over the long term.
