Benteler Armor Solutions is a german-based international supplier of armor materials and developer of armored vehicles and systems. Regarding materials, we offer unique armor steel grades, developed and manufactured during the last years.

BSEC (Benteler Security Steel) is available as flat plate armor steel and can also be produced in nearly any shape to meet tomorrows military design requirements. In addition, we offer fibre components and ceramic modules, either as stand-alone solutions or in combination with armor steel.

Benteler introduced three different grades of steel armor plates– BSEC410, BSEC510, BSEC610, which are available in various dimensions. Other than traditional armor steel, we use a special tool quench process, where material is hardened not by water quench, but by a metal-to-metal approach.

BSEC Steel Armor PlatesBy applying this technology to our armor steel grades, we achieve special properties, which are based on an isotropic and finest grain martensitic microstructure, which allows excellent ballistic and blast performance.

Also, flatness of the steel armor plates is excellent, since plates are fixed in the metal-to-metal conditions until cooled down completely. BSEC510 has been designed as best compromise on ductility and projectile resistance, while BSEC610 is the dedicated solutions against armor piercing.

BSEC Armor Steel Formed ComponentsThis metal-to-metal approach to armor engineering is not limited to flat plates, but can have nearly any shape, where forming and hardening tools are applied. Special build tools, which are cooled in a cost-effective manner, define the later form of the steel formed armor component, so that harding by metal-to-metal contact and forming takes place at the same time.

As a result, a couple of major advantages can be achieved for improve vehicles and land systems: - reduction of number of parts - reduction of weld seams as ballistic weak spots - improved blast / mine performance through related shape and reduced weldments - design freedom for best package utilization - weight reduction, since overlaps and reinforcements can be drastically reduced.

To design armored vehicles, there is the permanent pay-off between weight and cost. In order to provide the best solution case-by-case, we also provide fibre armor materials, either as spall liner or as part of armor structure. Depending on threat levels, fibres can be fitted to armor steel either clamped of bonded for extended performance. To follow the shaped armor approach, we also deliver formend fibre components. Materials can be produced either with pressing and autoclave processes.

Our protected fuel tanks combine self-healing properties, where projectile penetrated tanks close themselves after defined periods, with certified fire-resistance behaviour.

The protective layer in different thicknesses can be applied either manually or – to improve quality – within a dedicated tool. By applying the tool-based process, tight thickness tolerances and therefore best quality can be guaranteed.

With about 160 engineers, we develop armored components up to complete vehicles. Starting from concept development, the process chain covers engineering, simulation, prototyping and complete vehicle testing. We focus on civilian vehicles up to wheeled military systems. Combined with our material development and application expertise, customers find all required skills under one roof.
