A minute new UAV for military and security applications has made its public debut.
AeroVironment’s NAV (Nano Air Vehicle) resembles and has the characteristics of a hummingbird, hence its alternative name – the Nano Hummingbird.
With an initial maximum endurance of 11 minutes, the Hummingbird is equipped with a camera that acquires and streams images in real time, making it as suitable for urban surveillance as for use over the world’s battlefields.
Development on the AeroVironment Nano Air Vehicle has been taking place for approximately five years and DARPA – the US military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency – has invested $4m in the programme to date.
The Hummingbird surveillance NAV can power along at up to 17 kilometres per hour, climb, descend, fly backwards and sideways and rotate in both directions – all under the control of its operator.
It’s just 16cm wide and weighs a tiny 0.67 ounces (AA batteries weigh more). That’s 0.67 ounces (19 grams) inclusive of all flight systems and the video camera, not just the shell. It’s also reasonably robust and able to function in crosswinds of five miles per hour or less.
Video footage released by AeroVironment shows the Hummingbird flying in the air before entering a building, surveying its interior and flying back out again. A similar approach could bring a new safety element to security operations where the need to protect personnel is paramount.
“The historic achievement made by the Nano Hummingbird is an example of the leading-edge innovations introduced and deployed almost routinely by the AeroVironment UAS team”, AeroVironment Senior Vice President, Tom Herring, stated in a company press release on the new surveillance nano air vehicle issued mid-February.
He continued: “From the battle-proven Raven, Wasp and Puma small UAS to the tiny Nano Hummingbird to Global Observer, the largest, highest and longest flying UAS, AeroVironment continues to define the future of unmanned aircraft systems. Our mission in doing so is to provide our customers with advanced tools that help them succeed.”
Future security technology designs that tip a hat to the natural world could now emerge in the Hummingbird’s wake, as a DARPA representative added.
“The success of the NAV program paves the way for a new generation of aircraft with the agility and appearance of small birds”, Doctor Todd Hylton said.
